Below is the entirety of my notes from reading The Letter of James from the Bible by James.

I took notes, so you don't have to.

I read the book, so you can get to action.

As much for myself, as it is for you.

From paper to tech - all for you.

Table of Contents

Quotes Throughout the Book to Keep Top of Mind:

  • {myself} “We don’t give him, what we owe him.” (forever indebted)
  • “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”
  • “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.”

Notes:

James 1

  • Action items = Daily Confession
  • 3/10/19 - Mass at Covenant Community Church (separate from James 1:1-12)
    • Acceptance in full
    • Admitting sins (embracing “failure”) → forgiveness (let go)
    • sin = to miss the mark
    • {myself} “We don’t give him, what we owe him.” (forever indebted)
    • ** Empathy **
    • Colossians 2:13-14
    • 1 more confession = one more step closer to God
  • Unhealthy Practices That Come from a Lack of Daily Confession
    1. Make up (self-atonement)
    2. Buck up (trying harder)
    3. Break up (sliding away)
    4. Cover up (hiding your sin)
    5. Give up (giving into defeat)

James 2

  • {myself} 2:5-7 — I see what this Scripture passage is saying but I feel as though one can still be financially wealthy and comfortable and have strong faith. The boundaries don’t have to be poor = faithful and rich = oppression to others/blasphemy
  • {myself} 2:8 — see each other as the same. You thrive, I thrive. We are all connected. Empathy, understanding, and open-mindedness are the same here
  • “Mercy triumphs over judgement.”
  • Faith + works [in regard to James 2] = eternity / infinite happiness

James 3

  • A ship in a large sea of commotion. Waves, wind, and such. Guided by a small shudder.
  • Same goes for the tongue.
  • Same goes for thoughts, that direct our mind, and direct our life — as Earl Nightingale says in his famous speech
  • “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”
  • Wisdom from above:
    • Prune
    • Peaceable
    • Gentle
    • Open to reason
    • Full of mercy
    • Impartial + sincere

James 4

  • You desire and do not have
  • You count and cannot obtain
  • You do not have, because you do not ask
  • Don’t let anything come before God. If it does, it leads to a war w/ your current passions and ego
  • ** God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God
  • ** Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. (like Daniel or any warrior of Christ that had God w/ them)
  • ** Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you

James 5

  • Be present
  • So, whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin
  • “You have laid up treasure in the last days.”
  • Let “yes” be yes and “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation
    • CRITICAL
  • “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.”
