Full Intro (text)

Welcome

Welcome to the 2023 edition of the Human Performance Project’s Goal Setting program. I’m your host, Tyrell Mara.

I am a former NCAA Division 1 Basketball captain & Track & Field National Discus champion, now turned corpoate executive and human performance coach. I’m passionate about my family, peak human performance, pursuing fulfillment and building world class teams.

But my true magnificent obsession?

Understanding the equation and ingredients that allow us to wake up everyday with an abundance of energy & purpose, clear about who we are and what fires us up in life and willing to embrace fear & adversity to chase our dreams.

Having gone through every goal setting process & exercise in the book over the last 25 years - I always come back to the same questions. What is the purpose here? Why do we go through this process? Where is the value?

And ultimately, I’ve come to realize...

The way we are taught to set GOALS is BROKEN.

What I see is goal setting being taught in isolation. A simple tool that facilitates the process of looking up on the horizon, defining a target direction and outcome in the future, and making a more firm commitment to striving towards this desird future state.

And while this is a valuable skillset to develop - it misses the bigger opportunity.

To continuously LEARN about ourseLves.

Afterall, how do you know the goal you’re setting in the future is what will actually see you thriving and fulfilled between here and there? What knowledge is this bet grounded upon? I hope you have thought about this before, because this bet, or goal, will determine where and how you invest your most precious resources

on this planet (time & energy) over the coming days, weeks, months, years, even decades.

And so, what we are about to go through together is not simply “goal-setting” - it is a deep inquiry into who you are, what you believe in and how to fully own your decisions when thinking about that investment of time, energy, focus and` attention for your future decisions and endeavors.

Orientation

I encrouage you to go through this process with a curious mind and open heart. My greatest hope is that this will help you find and peel back layers to yourself you did not know existed. Through your own personal inquiry you will uncover a new bedrock to the foundation of who you are, what you beleive in, and what you know as most important in life.

BECAUSE.

I believe ‘traditional’ goal-setting is only the very small capstone of entire process we must go through in order to learn, grow, and thrive in life. Through goal-setting we determine where we look on the horizon, which High Dive we choose to climb and Deep End we (hopefully) jump into.

But WHERE you look and WHY is the real work that needs to be done. The work that so many of us miss, neglect or don’t even know exists until it’s too late.

What I have come to learn is that ultimately - whether it is looking back in reflection or looking forward in goal-setting - the purpose is the same:

To have an unwavering confidence & belief that you are exactly where you need to be.

Immersed, engaged & fulfilled in the present moment.

WHERE YOU WILL START

Before the workbook you will find two overview resources that are foundational components of the (Human Performance Project) HPP Programs.

  1. The Roadmap

The Roadmap is HPP participants guide and compass to navigating life. It is an archetypal representation of the phases we all find ourselves navigating through Archetypal in that they transcend all the things we could consider ‘different’ between us. This becomes our guide to re-orient ourselves in life and gain clarity on where we need to move to next in service of growth, learning and fulfillment.

  1. The Deep End Mindset

This one page overview begins to provide the next layer of detail regarding some of the key landmarks you see on The Roadmap. You will get a sense of the ‘work to be done’ in each stage of your journey.

The Plan

I wanted to provide a couple of these visuals for you to get your creative juices flowing as well as to provide you with your first opportunity to reflect. Where do you find yourself today on the Roadmap? Which area of the The Deep End Mindset intrigues you the most?

After taking a few minutes to let those thoughts sink in, you are now ready to dive in head first. Please keep in mind this workbook is meant to be light and easy - we are just scratching the surface relative to the depth and intensity participants in our Workshops & 1:1 Coaching experience. You may be left with a desire to understand more - if this is the case - ASK - I am only one email, message or text away.

Here is what you will find in the pages that follow.

The Foundation

1. Foundation

Believe or not, many of the answers to what will get you most fired up, engaged and fulfilled this year, exist within yourself today. The Foundation is where we dig into your past on a journey to articulate and deepen your ownership over who you are at your core - so that the bets you make for the future are firmly grounded.

Core Values. Intrinsic Drivers. Life Long Craft.

  1. WHAT LIFE EXPERIENCE HAS MOST DEFINED WHO YOU ARE TODAY?
  2. The experiences of our past often hold the answers to who we are at our core today. Think about the key experiences throughout your life that define and have shaped who you are today? What was it about those experiences that caused this impact? What is something you would stand-up and step-out for today based on what you have learnt about yourself in the past? Try to articulate the sentiment in a single word for each experience.

  3. WHAT EXPERIENCE CHALLENGED YOUR CHARACTER OR INTEGRITY IN THE LAST YEAR?
  4. Where did your non-negotiable values get called into question in the last year? What happened? What was the outcome and how did you leave that experience feeling? What did you learn about yourself that you can be more intentional explicit about this year?

  5. WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU EXPERIENCED ‘FLOW’?
  6. That moment of complete effortlessness where you feel on fire. You’ve experienced this before. Note a handful of experiences across different areas of your life where you think you may have experienced Flow - whether for a fleeting moment or for entire chapters.

  7. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ‘INGREDIENTS’ THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THAT ‘FLOW’ EXPERIENCE?
  8. There are a set of ingredients that came together to create those moments of Flow listed above. Try to identify the common themes, the ingredients that allowed you to play at your best and feel like you were unstoppable. Within this set of ingredients are your intrinsic drivers - your ability to access Flow states is dependant on these being present in any experience or pursuit.

  9. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR “LIFE’S WORK”?
  10. A big and intimidating question, I know. But give it a shot. Another way to think about this is what is a skill or craft are you investing in today that you hope to still be doing in 10, 20, 30 or 50 years from now? Summon your courage and let your vision out on this answer.

Reflection

2. Reflection

Goal-setting is an overhyped, ineffective process if not accompanied with structured reflection. This section, and the broader process of reflection, is where we are able to cement the most impactful and transformational learnings from any previous chapter. Compounding this learning onto our foundation and making slight adjustments to our navigational course for the next pursuit.

Pause. Peel Back the Layers. Access Growth.

  1. WHAT WAS YOUR YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THE LAST YEAR?
  2. Why? What was it about this experience that made you feel proud? What was the greatest challenge or obstacle to achieving this accomplishment? What did you learn about yourself that you want to cement and amplify in this next year?

  3. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST POSITIVE SURPRISE IN YOUR LIFE OVER THE LAST YEAR?
  4. There is the plan and then there is life. Think through a few of the unexpected positive highlight of this past year. If nothing else, this is a great reminder of how much we have to be thankful for. But as with everything in this program, see if you can go deeper and peel back the layers in search of learnings and insights.

  5. WHAT WAS THE GREATEST VALLEY, DISAPPOINTMENT OR NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE OF THE LAST YEAR?
  6. Where did you experience adversity and challenge? Was it was planned or by surprise? What would you do differently next time, if anything? What did you learn about your decision making process from this experience that you can adjust going forward?

  7. WHAT ARE THE COMMITMENTS OR EXPERIENCES IN THE LAST YEAR THAT DRAINED YOU OF ENERGY?
  8. Where have you felt your energy be sucked from you in this past year? Survey the various ways you spend your time, across career, social groups, hobbies and personal interests - which experiences did you leave feeling de-motivated or zapped?

  9. WHAT DO YOU REGRET?
  10. While mindlessly draining our energy on regrets is not a healthy practice. Intentionally revisiting and reflecting on the decisions we wish we could take back provides learning opportunities. It may sting to write down your regrets from the past year - but as quickly as you write them down, start thinking about how you can make new decisions this year based on the learning you extract from these lived experiences.

  11. WHAT IS LIFE LONG CRAFT YOU WANT TO INVEST IN OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS?
  12. Think of this skillset as something you are passionate about that can transcend industries, career paths and domains. It is what sits underneath the activities that light you up in your day to day job or pursuits. Your life may look very different in 10 years, but you will still be actively investing in this skillset wherever you are.

Intention

3. Intention

Before we get into the granularity of goals - let’s take a moment to envision what you want this upcoming year to feel like. At the end of the day, goals are an important future looking indicator to our direction in life - but what is disproportionately more important is how we feel today, in the present moment. Because it you cannot sustain the highest levels of engagement, engagement and fulfillment, you will never reach the audacious goals you set in the first place.

Rituals. Physiology. Energy. Rhythms.

  1. WHAT IS YOUR THEME FOR THIS UPCOMING YEAR?
  2. We will develop goals and structure as it relates to the upcoming year. But first, let’s talk about how you want this year to feel. In a few words or sentences write down how you would articulate the theme for this upcoming year in your life. Don’t be afraid of the creativity that may arise in yourself.

  3. HOW WILL YOU DEFINE AND EVALUATE SUCCESS IN 365 DAYS?
  4. Develop a set of 3-5 criteria that you will use in a year from now to evaluate how successful you have been. These can be quantifiable metrics or qualitative assessments. Think about what it will feel like to pass with flying colors or fail miserably and whether you’re convinced this is truly the right evaluation of success.

  5. HOW WILL YOU RECOVER & REFUEL?
  6. Make a list of 3-5 activities for daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly routines or rituals that you are confident, if performed consistently, will help you holistically recover. How realistic is it that you are able to accomplish all of these for 365 days straight? Re-work the list until you are confident that you can maintain these activities.

  7. HOW WILL YOU BUILD A ROUTINE TO LEARN, GROW AND COURSE CORRECT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?
  8. What happens if you get 2 months into the year and the goals and plan you’ve set for the year is feeling off? How will you carve out time to reflect on the path you’ve laid out ahead? Build this into your calendar on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis.

  9. WHERE CAN YOU LEVEL UP YOUR RITUALS AND PHYSIOLOGY?
  10. Where are your biggest weaknesses from a recovery and rejuvenation perspective? Think about your daily routines/habits all the way through to monthly or quarterly rituals you either did or didn’t deploy to recovery effectively. What can you tweak in the coming year to access more of that focused, inspired energy? As with your recovery & refuelling activities above, rework the list until your confidence in feasibility is high.

Goal Setting

4. Goal Setting

Finally, let’s dig into what you want to accomplish in this upcoming year, and why? As with everything else in the Human Performance Project - the process of goal setting is less about the accomplishment of any one thing, and much more about uncovering deeper truths about yourself.

  • I’m wishing you courage, presence, humility and fulfillment in this upcoming year that through those ingredients you may come to know yourself more deeply and accomplish more than you ever thought possible.*

What and Why. The High Dive. The Deep End.

  1. FAST FORWARD 365 DAYS - WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF ACCOMPLISHING IN THIS FUTURE YEAR?
  2. Let’s fast forward and assume this year has already taken place. As you imagine reflecting on your accomplishments - what do you envision yourself being most proud of and why? This is a great exercise to start giving yourself a holisitic view of what success, and therefore your goals should look like.

  3. FAST FORWARD 365 DAYS, WHAT COULD YOU END UP REGRETTING MOST?
  4. Now consider with all the time you have this year, are there any decisions or things you must do in order to minimize the amount of regret in your hypothetical reflection. Sometimes fear can get in the way of us going after the right goals, fast forwarding and getting a true sense of whether you regret doing or not doing that thing helps add another perspective to the goal you are about to commit to.

  5. WHAT IS AN AUDACIOUS AMBITION OR PURSUIT YOU COULD COMMIT TO IN THIS UPCOMING YEAR?
  6. What idea gets you fired up and simultaneously scared to death when thinking about? Why is this pursuit important to you? Which Core Values & Intrinsic Drivers does it align with? Is it part of your Long Term Craft? What is the worst outcome that could arise if you fail? What happens if you consider your fear as a signal that you are exactly where you need to be?

  7. WHAT ARE 3 GOALS YOU CAN SET THAT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR FULFILLMENT, ENERGY AND HAPPINESS?
  8. Whether it is your big audacious goal or a daily routine you want to commit to, the purpose of these goals is to directly contribute to the fulfillment and energy you experience on a daily basis. You may re-commit to something that worked in the last year, or try something completely new.

  9. WHAT WILL YOU DO TO INVEST IN YOUR LIFE’S WORK?
  10. It may be that your audacious ambition is directly aligned with your life’s work. If so, what is a less intense goal that will contribute to your longer term skills & craft? If your audacious goal is unrelated to your long term craft - identify a manageable goal that can make progress on this front.

  11. HOW WILL YOU INVEST IN OTHERS IN THE UPCOMING YEAR?
  12. Philanthropy and impact are important components of each of our lives - to leave the earth a little better than we found it. There is a selfish motive too, giving makes us happier, more motivated and fulfilled - providing us with more energy to chase those other dreams and goals as well.
